What Is Femicide Watch?

Femicide Watch Danmark er en civilsamfundsbaseret over vågning og dokumentation af kvindedrab, inspireret af FN's anbefalinger. Formålet er at synliggøre og forebygge drab på kvinder i nære relationer og på baggrund af køn.

Mission & Vision

  • Overall Goal To reduce the number of femicides in Denmark.
  • Strategic Focus To demonstrate how robust knowledge and documentation can inform and result in:
    • Improved legislation.
    • Earlier, more ef fective intervention strategies.
    • Strengthened cross-sectoral collaboration among relevant agencies.
  • Our approach places an equal focus on documentation (creating evidence-based data) and prevention (translating data into action).

Method

  • We adhere to the UN's international protocol for the monitoring of femicide.
  • Data Sources:
    • Public document requests and court records.
    • Police reports.
    • Media coverage.
    • Interviews and accounts from next of kin/relatives.
  • We analyse both quantitative patterns and qualitative narratives. Our work maintains a continuous focus on anonymisation, ethics, and security at all stages.

What have we mapped so far?

Number of cases in the database (e.g., 327 cases from 2000-2023).
Key pat terns: Relationship to perpetrator, motive, prior violence, police repor ts, etc.
Examples of recurring risk factors and systemic failures

On the femicide map, we highlight four parameters that are
relevant in relation to each individual femicide:

Woman's age / 1.
Location of the killing / 2.
Year of the killing / 3.
Woman's relationship to the perpetrator(s) /4.

We highlight these four parameters because they are essential for gaining an idea of the scope and complexity of femicides in Denmark. Foraddi tional parameters, you can access our data behind the mapping.
We have a responsibility to protect, as far as possible, the right to anonymity for victims and their relatives. Our map, therefore, does not include names, images, or other personally identifiable information. As several of the femicides that have occurred in Denmark have been under massive media coverage, we cannot guarantee 100% anonymity in all cases.
